GATHIGI GISHURU

The 5 to 9:

Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union is proud to be a Seattle institution. We have been a part of this community for more than 80 years and are reminded every day how lucky we are to be able to serve the people of this great city. That’s why we are excited to present the Seattle Original series, a tribute to this place and some of the unique people who make it what it is. If you are looking for a new place to do your banking, we would love to talk to you. Click here to learn more about SMCU.

When some people head home after work, it’s a straight shot to the couch, a quick phone call to order a pizza, and onto catching up with their favorite sitcom. Well, not Thig. When he finishes his 9-to-5, Gathigi’s day is just getting started. Of course, he may see the world a bit differently than most of us.

A lot of time he sees the Emerald City through the lens of whichever camera he has with him. He sees the magic in the little scenes that many of us walk by every day without noticing. His photos are snapshot commentaries on the beautiful, the ironic, and the absurd.

His message isn’t limited to film, though. Gathigi also shares his point of view through lyrics put to beats with the help of his collaborators in hip-hop, The Physics. They lay down stories of life, Seattle, and perseverance. They spend long nights in the studio agonizing over every word, every note to make sure that the story in their heads is the same one they get on tape.

You can’t help but be taken with Thig’s passion. Whether he is sharing it through music or through one of his other projects, like Rappers with Cameras, he shares himself with everyone. After a few hours of sleep, he’s back at his desk at the cancer research center sharing his passion in a different way. Gathigi embodies the drive and artistic virtues shared by the amazing community of musicians this city has created.
