When you’ve been doing business in a community for more than 80 years, you become a part of that community. That’s certainly true for Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union.

SMCU was founded in the midst of the Great Depression by seven City of Seattle municipal workers searching for ways to get credit at rates lower than what they could get from the banks at the time – when they were able to get any at all. They pooled their resources to weather the unprecedented financial storm. These were the people who built Seattle. The foundation they laid allowed Seattle to grow into the world-class city it’s become.

As time went on, the City’s credit union expanded and allowed more Seattleites to borrow for their first home, grow their savings, and generally be their own boss when it came to their personal finances. Eventually, Seattle Metropolitan opened its doors to anyone who lived or worked anywhere in the entire state of Washington.

SMCU has never forgotten we are a Seattle institution. We’ve always celebrated our role in giving back to the community we call home. Over the years SMCU has supported many local organizations with time and money to foster those causes that make Seattle and the Puget Sound the best place to live in the entire country.

That’s why SMCU is thrilled to present the Seattle Original series, a tribute to all things Seattle. Through profiles of amazing Seattleites, we hope to capture some of what makes Seattle such a wonderful place to live, work, and play. We hope you find them inspiring and entertaining, and that Seattle Original reminds you that no other place in the world is quite like our home.

SMCU shares many of the characteristics of these Seattle Originals. Like Gathigi, we look to share our passion with Seattle. In our case, our passion is making sure that our members know how to be successful in managing their money. As Dani was when looking for options when the future looked bleak, we are persistent in our devotion to the Seven Principles that guide our actions as a not-for-profit co-op. We do all of this because we were created by our friends and neighbors, and we still have that community’s best interests at heart.
